Happy Independence Day fellow Americans!
I'm sure I'll post a lot of other stuff from now til July 5th, but I just came across these stars and stripes from http://stiffspeed.tumblr.com and http://mostuffsthlm.tumblr.com and this is the first time I can recall making an effort to get some red white and blue posted for the holiday. I hope you've got the day off work to kick back and enjoy some good food and friends.

Carol "Bunny" Burkett
a mini dress and go go boots.. so I guess Jungle Pam wasn't the only go go boot wearer in drag racing!
I must have found this photo on a site I was just looking at, but I don't know which one. Gentlemint? Gentleman racer? I'm not sure
But Carol got into drag racing young, at age 15 at the wheel of her boyfriends 55 Mercury... and she had her own car at age 19, a 64 Mustang. Racing seems to have been quickly a overly expensive hobby, and Carol went to work for big tips at the Playboy Club, and then returned to drag racing with a nickname... Bunny.
She kept racing for decades, and in 1986 won the IHRA championship in alochol funny cars!

drag racing, wheelie bar sporting, wheelstanding stingray... damn
Well, now that I look at them closer, maybe calling those "wheelie bars" was a mistake, but they are sure set for showmanship wheelies

Funny Car Summer, documentary movie available from Netflix, follows Jim Dunn through the 1974 funny car races, and gives a good look at 1974
the car he raced was this rear engined Barracuda, one of only 2 rear engined funny cars racing in 1974
his ordinary job for 47 weeks a year was as a firefighter
the movie covers the drag strips in So Cal mostly, but also Oklahoma and Utah
and I've no idea why the races at El Mirage and Bonneville are in the movie, or even if they are from 1974
Carl and Veda Orr!
and no shit, they lit the back tire on fire to race bicycles with small chutes that were pulled in a parking lot race

Screen shots from the 1958 movie Hot-Rod Girl
Von Dutch pinstriping on the back?
In the credits it lists San Fernando as the dragstrip they filmed at
the movie plot is about the girl in the T Bird, far side of the track in the above photo
I can't recommend the movie, it's so over the top force feeding the anti street racing propaganda it's actually disgusting.
